Can’t hold on to online teaching?
That's because you haven't fully experienced the magic of online teaching.
See how Professor Wen Jiandong and his team develop the advantages of online teaching.
Prof Wen is one of the first faculties at the School of Economics and Management to experiment with online teaching. In 2014, Professor Wen Jiandong's Microeconomics was selected as the National Quality 0pen Online course after it was launched in MOOC. In 2020, the sudden outbreak of the epidemic disrupted the traditional classroom teaching mode. Professor Wen Jiandong, a senior MOOC "master" who is the leader of the platform course group of Macroeconomics, specially summed up some online teaching experience and views, hoping to share them with teachers and students.
01 How to learn : Learn to understand and develop wisdom
Professor Wen jiandong hopes that students will not only learn professional theory in school, but also gain all-round comprehensive ability and lifelong learning ability and develop their own wisdom. For the convenience of understanding, Professor Wen Jiandong make an analogy: just as the master learns the sword in the martial arts novels, he not only need to learn the sword moves, but also need to grasp the sword method and meaning, so that he can adapt himself to the situation and overcome the enemy in the face of new opponents. Students shouldn’t just copy the documents of the encyclopedia in their own brains, but install the learning and research AI in their brains, so that they can explore the unknown by themselves.
Professor Wen Jiandong recalled that when students who had graduated for a long time came back to school, someone said embarrassedly, “Teacher, I remember that you taught us Western economics, but I am ashamed that I have forgotten many principles and concepts.” As a teacher, Professor Wen Jiandong was frustrated at first, as if he didn't see the achievement of teaching. But slowly, he found a pattern, although some students forgot the principles and concepts, but they had the way of thinking in economics; Some students not only forget principles and concepts, but also sound like non-financial majors. Interestingly, the former group perform better in their academic and career development overall than the latter group.
02 How to teach : “Professional PLUS” and “Theoretical PLUS”
Based on the above thinking, Professor Wen Jiandong and his teaching team applied the concepts of"Professional PLUS" and "Theory PLUS"to design the course. Not only did they teach systematic professional theoretical knowledge, but also they trained students' all-round comprehensive abilities through the teaching of professional theory, including scientific spirit, rigorous logical thinking, independent thinking, reading and understanding ability, written and oral expression ability, communication ability, team spirit and so on, and finally enabled students to acquire lifelong learning ability. These abilities do not require additional time to study and are acquired automatically through the study of specialized theory. In order to achieve the above goals, Professor Wen jiandong emphasized the importance of using online teaching technology, shifting the teaching part to online teaching platform, changing the dependence on paper textbooks, and turning the classroom into a place for students to show what they have learned and conduct discussions.
The online teaching team on the platform ofMacroeconomicshas realized the unification of "standardized homework" and "personalized teaching".The teachers in the team can take advantage of the macroeconomics MOOCS that have already been built, or they can teach on the Internet themselves, and then organize study sessions in the course clusters. Through the teaching discussion of teachers in the course group, the task that must be taught in all classes was determined, which accounted for about 80% and was the curriculum standard. At the same time, each teacher is given 20% of the optional content and teaching methods, and teachers are encouraged to further organize analysis and discussion based on the economic problems in the epidemic, such as price rising and control, the impact on the macro economy, economic globalization, and the impact on the domestic industrial chain. With the help of a number of unified examinations, let each class achieve the prescribed goals and tasks, to achieve "standardization".
03 How to look : Develop and apply the advantages of online teaching
According to Wen jiandong, using online technology will become an important part of daily teaching due to the epidemic. In the traditional way, many schools think: Are you teaching in the classroom? If only online teaching, the workload is not approved. But in fact, if the teaching organization is good, online teaching actually increases the teaching and learning time of teachers and students, students will gain more, and the "cost performance" of classroom teaching will also be greatly improved.
However, online teaching is by no means a substitute for classroom teaching, but a useful supplement and support to classroom teaching. At present, there are two forms of online teaching during the epidemic: one is online live; the other is recorded videos such as MOOCS or PPT. Whether it is live or recorded, it is just a part of the teaching process, and more importantly, the interaction between teachers and students is carried out on this basis. This interaction should be conducted both on the online platform and in the physical classroom. Online interaction cannot replace the interaction in the physical classroom, but only on the platform during the current epidemic.
Professor Wen Jiandong talked about 5 points of view on online teaching:
1. Teachers will have a process to be familiar with online teaching, which is clumsy at first, but once they are familiar with this mode, they will accept it, which is a training for all the staff for the promotion and application of online teaching in the future.
2.Online teaching will increase teachers' effort, which is a good thing for students. At the same time, it will increase students' energy to study.
3. Students are more active on the Internet than in the physical classroom, and the classroom atmosphere is easier to mobilize.
4. The assessment of students' learning is more diversified and concise. All the performance of students will be recorded in the form of data, which can be automatically converted into their usual scores. This encourages students to study throughout the course, rather than sprint for the final exam.
5. It can be very convenient to carry out real-time testing, testing the learning effect at any time, so as to improve the learning efficiency.
Asked what message he had for the students, Professor Wen said with great expectation:
I really hope that after the epidemic, I can share the passion of hard study and the joy of suddenly being enlightened with my classmates in the real class, and feel the beauty of economic theory together -- let me see the light in your inquiring eyes.
