报告摘要:
The ideas behind sustainable communities have been present in various forms for decades, which can be traced back to Ebenezer Howard’s vision of Garden City in the 1980s. Similarly, concept of Smart Growth was introduced in the 1990s. During this time, authorities aimed to manage and promote the positive aspects of growth through planning, policy, and regulation in order to influence the allocation of new development, while limiting growth’s undesirable impacts. The other two key concepts are New Urbanism and Transit Oriented Development. Essentially, a sustainable community is “one in which economic vitality, ecological integrity, civic democracy, and social well-being are linked in complementary fashion, thereby fostering a high quality of life and strong sense of reciprocal obligation among its members”.There are significant opportunities and challenges in Australia in terms of sustainable community development, which is arguably due to the large number of urban renewal projects. This presentation reports a recent study on the sustainable community development. The focus is placed on the current awareness, policy, issues and tools. A case study of Tonsley Park is reported to introduce South Australia’s practices in facilitating sustainable community development.
