Multinational enterprises (MNEs) frequently contend with disruptive events that jeopardize their operations in host countries and necessitate adjustments to their global presence for sustained competitiveness. Existing research has focused predominantly on the MNEs directly affected, overlooking other MNEs susceptible to indirect consequences and lacking insights into the mechanisms governing those impacts. Building on the event system theory, this study uses a pivotal event—the US–China trade war—to scrutinize how Japanese MNEs in China have recalibrated their global involvement in response to the trade war. Although Japanese MNEs are not the direct targets of the trade war, they can become associated with the event through the market and ownership dimensions of the event space. Consequently, in anticipation of the negative impacts of the trade war event, they reduce their operations in China. Our research reveals that this decision is also influenced by whether Japanese MNEs have similar industry layouts in other countries, thus allowing them to replace their operations in China. This study extends research related to MNEs’ international involvement by exploring a scenario of rising geopolitical tensions, and it also contributes a new and novel observer perspective to the literature on MNE activity under globally disruptive events.
